According to media reports, an 18-year-old student was chosen as the Britain’s most beautiful face, and it’s proven scientifically. Her face is perfectly symmetrical and she has the “optimum ratio” between her mouth, eyes, chin and forehead, according to Huffington Post. I wonder if men were also in the contest? 

But I didn’t know that having a symmetrical face defines beauty… (not that I have anything against it though.) If I’m not mistaken, the wife of Odagiri Joe (what was her name… Kahii Yuu) also has a symmetrical face?

化粧品メーカーがスポンサーしたコンテストで、18歳のフローレンス・コルゲートさんが「イギリスで最も美しい顔の持ち主」として選ばれました。コルゲートさんの顔は左右の対称が完璧であるほか、口、目、あご、おでこの比が「最適」だとのことです。（それぞれのパーツの距離がほどよく離れているということ、なのでしょう。）たしかに誰が見ても美人ですが、私はもう少し崩れて味のある顔がいい。

でも男性は候補に挙がらなかったのか。高村薫の小説に出てくる男の殺し屋とか、コルゲートさんより絶対「美人」だろう。

それにしても左右対称であることが美人の条件とは知らなかった。これが正しければ、オダギリジョーの奥さん（かしいゆう？）もすごく美人ということか。確かに美しい人です。

Diego Rivera, Electric Power (1931-32)

I’ve never really had a chance to properly look at Diego Rivera’s works til now, but I have a feeling he will be one of my favorite artists. It took me a while to become his fan but it’s still better late than never! I want to go buy a book about his works and spend a whole day at home.

I guess that outside Mexico, he might be more famous as the “husband of Frida Kahlo”, anyway that’s how I first knew him. And he had quite overwhelming looks, especially with Frida Kahlo next to him (basically, he is huge and she is kind of tiny) …

Diego Rivera (1886-1957), whose full name was Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez, was a Mexican painter famous for his mural painting. He spent a lot of time abroad (Europe, U.S. etc). The photo is the postcard I got from MoMA Design Store in Omotesando.

His later works seem too much detailed and maybe too “dense” for me to understand, but it’s interesting just looking at them and they do remind me of works by a 16th century painter, Hieronymus Bosh.

今日はメキシコの画家、ディエゴ・リベラ（1886-1957）について。

以前からフリダ・カーロの夫ということは知っていて、とにかく巨漢のイメージがあったのですが、これまで彼の作品にきちんと対面することはありませんでした。が！先日表参道のMoMAデザインストアで、彼の作品のポストカード（上の写真、”Electric Power”）などを見たら、たちまちファンになってしまい。。。色の使い方とか、構図の取り方とか、まさに私のツボです。キュビズムの影響を受けた画家で、壁画で有名だそう。

後年の作品は見た感じ少し、緻密すぎて私には難解なところもありそうですが、16世紀のオランダの画家、ヒエロニムス・ボスの絵を思い起こさせます。ディエゴ・リベラの作品集を買って一日中、家でじっくり読みたい。

ちなみにフルネームは、ディエゴ・マリア・デ・ラ・コンセプシオン・フアン・ネポムエセノ・エスタニスラオ・デ・ラ・リベラ・イ・バリエントス・アコスタ・イ・ロドリゲス、だって。本当かな。
